The Tazewell County Health Department (TCHD) is a county government agency whose primary role is public health. The Health Education division's primary focus is school age children and their parents. TCHD has been providing Abstinence Only Education programming since 1994. The teen birth rate has steadily declined since that time by 5.0%. The current rate is 8%. The Abstinence Education Program (AEP) addresses issues of preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections/diseases through abstinence only instruction. The AEP provides education during the school day at 11 different schools within the county.
