Young people today are constantly presented with situations involving choices about sex, drugs and gangs Ð choices which have serious consequences. Parents may feel a lack of self-confidence, even helplessness when it comes to advising children about these issues. However, studies show that in communicating their values and expectations to their children, parents can greatly influence both their children's ideas and behaviors. In 1999, a group of of medical and educational professionals began presenting Parent Power Workshops to school, faith-based and community groups in Chicago. These presentations are now available for use in other communities across the country and are also available in Spanish.

Preparing my Children for Life Curriculum
The Confederation of Spanish American Families has created a Parent Program based on our own book "Preparando a mis Hijos para la Vida" "Preparing my Children for Life." It's an excellent tool used to foster the communication skills between parents and children. The content and activities were designed to create a climate of trust and openness in relation to a topic that remains to be very taboo, sexuality. This curriculum also addresses other risk factors that plague our youth today, such as pre-marital sex, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The language is in a simple easy to read manner.
